despite a day of sunshine, the evening winter air stings my nose with each inhale, as i climb the steps towards city college. a setting sun behind me paints the smooth and cloudless sky with a wash of magenta and lavender, while a bevy of tiny birds above me undulate en masse, twittering, flittering, and flirting their way into a spring fling. city college atop the hill grows colder with each passing minute in the face of a dying sun; its postmodern façade separating the seemingly detatched worlds of academia and reality. despite the school's motto of "the truth shall make you free" emblazoned overhead in large, block-letter relief, at this hour and in this light, the grey stylized columns framing the entrances ironically conjure up images of oversized jail-cell bars, rather than the ακαδημία πλάτωνος and a legacy of higher learning.
no object is so beautiful that, under certain conditions, it will not look ugly.
