the car clicks deeply as i press the door-lock button on my remote switch. mind fuzzy with thoughts of tentative assuredness and question, i walk back to my apartment as gardening sprinklers turn on beside me, letting loose a bevy of hissing snakes into the brush. my flat-bottomed shoes clop along with each step upon an ever-dampening pavement, and i try in vain to step over the glistening rivers of lawn-blood, growing wider with each passing second. a loud crunch screams from underfoot. it is different from the crunch of a dry maple leaf, or a snap of a twig. this is crisper… deadlier… like the crunch of an egg perhaps, if the inside wasn’t so liquid… and yielding.
i’m so sorry, i whisper to myself in the chilly, hissing, darkness, feeling absolutely despicable. i furrow my brows while my heart sinks, as pressure still builds in my brain from my thoughts, the thoughts, and i trudge back to my door, with remnants of a life-once-upon-a-time, clinging to my sole.
the only way to get rid of temptation is to yield to it...
i can resist everything but temptation.
