sitting by the pool, i am surrounded by the almost mesmerizing sound of splashing water as it laps over the floor-flush edge of the pool and into the drain. like a broken metronome, rhythm and tone varying with the amount of waves at any particular moment, the strange pouring-rain-rustling-leaves-sound of the white noise manages to drown out most of the cars that pass by on the road just outside the pool... save a few with enlarged mufflers or shrieky brakes. as i look across the surface of the turquoise water, reflecting neither sun nor clouds on this blanket-white foggy day, a red l.e.d. counter ticks by with each passing second. 15:30, 31, 32... between the white-blue dotted lane-lines, kids splash their way from left to right and back again. here and there, brightly colored flourescent swimcaps bob like speedy buoys amidst the small white explosions of water. freestyle! backstroke! freestyle! an instructor yells to his group of little swimmers. let's go! the more i watch the water splash, and listen to its hypnotic shushes, the more i regret not bringing my swimsuit today. taking one look at the whiteboard sky however, instantly reminds me of why i left my swim stuff behind. in the distance a few obviously under-watered palm trees rustle their golden-green chartruse fronds as i pull my jacket in closer to my body to stave off the icy breeze - a truly futile attempt since the chill manages to seemingly permeate everything. over my head slowly passing birds give the illusion that someone had cut out two crow-shaped holes from the white paper; their jet-black images in stark contrast to the piercing medium.
the true mystery of the world is the visible, not the invisible.
