how odd a thing to be taking a break from writing... only to write. having woken up this morning earlier than scheduled once again, today's sunny weather through the windows and jazzy tunes emanating from my speakers have been partcularily conductive in edging me to revist some past travels and recount a few experiences for jess, who is trying to get together a collection of journals and sorts. international travel has now become my futile attempt to escape from america, it's bubble, it's views, and despite being rather progressive (as it likes to claim), it's closed-minded nature. sating a desire to experience a different culture, a different mindset, the closest i come to genuine authenticity seems to be visiting the various ethnic restaurants around town, when i am most often unable to flee this place.
chatting with arun over coffee after a polish-czech dinner of duck and pierogis, we discussed plans to restart the project of creating an organization dedicated to searching for and educating the masses of new practical solutions to issues of policy, social structure, culture, and progressive positive change. while the seventies have demonstrated colleges' and universities' roles in instigating change, why today's young adults remain so apathetic appears a mystery. consistency offers a sense of comfort and safety to most, and many seem simply unwilling to challenge their own thoughts and views, let alone have them be challenged by others - others usually labled as radicals, fanatics, and lunatics. the conversation itself reminded me of an episode of futurama, which surprisingly offers great satire about society today from a future society's point of view. needing to reconstruct the ending to the final episode of "single female lawyer" starring "jenny mc neal" (alley mc beal), the characters have to improvise after the script runs out, forcing leela to put a twist on the faux-show, by having jenny mc neal propose to the judge. leela says the twist is new, unexpected, and edgy, but fry explains that people like things to be old, predictable, and routine. new and unexpected things make people feel afraid and stupid - a perfect commentary on society today.
deep worthwhile conversations seem to require too much thinking on many people's behalves, often causing them to fear inadequacy for the conversation itself or not responding correctly. venture into the realms of fine art, literature, or wine, and lose them entirely. it is this uninformed complacency and consistency that much of the country relies on, evident in the similar types of products consumed, the television shows watched, and the movies shown. politics itself also appears to thrive on society's regualrity, whereby as long as nothing rocks the boring boat too much, the government can go on functioning seemingly undetected, just under the skin of popular acceptability.
the security of society lies in custom and unconscious instinct, and the basis of the stability of society, as a healthy organism, is the complete absence of any intelligence amongst its members.
